WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Arkansas voters returned Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Sen. Tom Cotton to office in two decisive Republican victories.
  • Sanders received 52.8% with 52.8% of votes counted, defeating Democrat Fred Love and Libertarian Colt Shelby.
  • Cotton won 54.3%, defeating Democratic nominee Hallie Shoffner and Libertarian nominee Jeff Wadlin.
  • Cotton was first elected to the Senate in 2014 and chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Tuesday’s midterm elections brought the usual pain for the party occupying the White House, but Republicans still found several reasons to celebrate. Arkansas delivered two of the night’s clearest victories by returning Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Sen. Tom Cotton to office.

The results ensured that two prominent conservatives will continue representing the Razorback State. Sanders defeated Democrat Fred Love in the governor’s race, while Cotton secured another Senate term by beating Democrat Hallie Shoffner.

Those Arkansas victories joined other welcome results for Republicans during an otherwise mixed election night. Florida elected Republican Byron Donalds as its next governor, while Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky won the Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell.

Not every contest went the conservative movement’s way, but Arkansas offered no such suspense in its two major statewide races. Voters gave Sanders and Cotton solid advantages over their Democratic rivals, leaving the left empty handed in both contests.

With 52.8% of votes counted in the governor’s race, Sanders had received 329,721 votes, representing 52.8% of the total. Love had 252,039 votes, or 40.4%, while Libertarian Colt Shelby had 42,470 votes, or 6.8%.

That placed Sanders comfortably ahead of both challengers as she claimed a second term as governor. The result also allowed her to continue advancing the unapologetic vision for Arkansas that she emphasized during the campaign.

“I’m fighting for an Arkansas that knows who we are and what we stand for and will never apologize for it,” said Sanders.

The governor’s race featured Sanders as the Republican incumbent, Love as a Democratic state senator and Shelby as the Libertarian candidate. Arkansas voters ultimately kept Sanders in office rather than handing control to either of her challengers.

Cotton also delivered a convincing Republican victory in the state’s United States Senate contest. AP News declared Cotton the winner over Shoffner in the Nov. 3 general election, securing another term for the Republican incumbent.

Cotton received 384,777 votes, or 54.3%, in the Senate race. Shoffner finished with 301,922 votes, or 42.6%, while Libertarian nominee Jeff Wadlin received 16,227 votes, accounting for 3.1%.

The Senate contest featured Cotton as the Republican incumbent, Shoffner as the Democratic nominee, and Wadlin as the Libertarian nominee. Cotton’s advantage over both opponents gave Republicans another clear reason to cheer as results arrived.

Cotton was first elected to the Senate in 2014 and previously won reelection in 2020. His latest victory allows him to continue serving Arkansas in the chamber and keeps the seat in Republican hands.

Before entering politics, Cotton served as an Army officer in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also previously represented Arkansas’ 4th Congressional District and currently chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The two Arkansas contests followed a similar pattern, with the Republican incumbents defeating Democratic and Libertarian opposition. Sanders led the governor’s field with 52.8%, while Cotton topped the Senate field with 54.3%.

Sanders’ victory preserves Republican leadership in the governor’s office for another term. Cotton’s win likewise returns an established Republican senator and committee chairman to Washington after another statewide campaign.

For conservatives watching a difficult midterm map produce mixed results, Arkansas provided an unmistakable bright spot. Sanders and Cotton both brought home solid wins, and Razorback State voters made sure two reliable Republicans will keep their jobs.
