Mandy Patinkin used a last-minute appeal to Michigan voters to make an extraordinary pitch for Democrat Abdul El Sayed, claiming the U.S. Senate candidate is uniquely positioned to guarantee the safety of Jews. The left-wing actor framed the race as a test of democracy and Jewish security, as reported by Breitbart.

Patinkin posted a lengthy message and video on his X account Friday, promoting El Sayed while attacking the political forces aligned against him. His central proclamation was sweeping: “Jewish safety depends on a real multiracial democracy—and Abdul is the one fighting to protect it.”

The Princess Bride star continued, “We know how much it matters to live in a country where our rights are protected, where the law applies equally to everyone, and where the majority can’t just decide that some people don’t deserve the same freedoms. The safety and freedom we’ve found in America didn’t happen by accident. They exist because of democracy. And protecting democracy means protecting Jewish safety, too.”

That dramatic argument rests on Patinkin repeatedly describing America as a democracy. Yet America is a republic, a basic distinction that his impassioned political message simply brushed aside while presenting El Sayed as the indispensable guardian of Jewish freedom and security.

Patinkin also complained that the “courts are weakened” and warned about people losing equal protection under the law. His lecture ignored criticism that the Democratic Party he supports has used police, courts, and government power against political opponents.

The actor then escalated his warning. “That’s why I find it so alarming to see what’s happening right now. When masked government agents are taking people off the streets and citizens are being shot in public, we should all be worried about where things are headed. As Jews, we know that when a government starts targeting certain groups of people, no one should assume they’re safe from what comes next.”

That comparison was both inflammatory and misleading. The Trump administration is enforcing immigration laws against illegal migrants, who are not a single religious, racial, or ethnic group, despite Patinkin invoking the historical dangers faced by Jews to support his political case.

Comparing Jews with illegal migrants also diminishes the racism and violence Jews frequently face. Patinkin’s message turned a political dispute over immigration enforcement into an ominous warning about government persecution, without establishing that the circumstances are comparable.

Patinkin next targeted El Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, accusing him of standing with President Donald Trump and a movement supposedly threatening democracy. The actor again connected that accusation directly to Jewish safety.

“Mike Rogers has chosen to align himself with a movement that is willing to attack our democracy. He stood with Trump and refused to accept the results of the 2020 election. And now we’re seeing what happens when a political movement treats the rights and dignity of certain people as disposable. For Jews, these things should set off alarm bells,” Patinkin said.

That attack does not match the record described here. Trump complained about fraud after the 2020 election, but he left office after losing to Joe Biden and therefore abided by the result, while no American has lost rights during Trump’s second White House term.

Patinkin concluded with another sweeping declaration linking one Michigan candidate to the fate of both democracy and Jewish safety. “Jewish safety is tied to the health of our democracy. We can’t protect one without protecting the other. And in this Senate race, Abdul is the candidate who understands that and is willing to fight for it.”

The actor’s endorsement also ignored a major concern surrounding the candidate he presented as the singular protector of Jews. El Sayed’s family and supporters have a lengthy history of involvement with the radical, anti-Jewish Muslim Brotherhood terror group, according to the criticism presented in the account.

Patinkin’s appeal ultimately asked Michigan voters to accept an enormous claim: that electing El Sayed is essential to Jewish security. His message relied on warnings about Trump, immigration enforcement, weakened courts, and threatened rights while dismissing serious criticism of the Democrat he enthusiastically endorsed.
