A man died Monday afternoon after falling from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell. The horrifying incident trapped terrified parkgoers aboard the stopped ride until they could be evacuated.

The unidentified rider fell from the roller coaster, according to witnesses and park officials who confirmed the death to 11Alive. The incident occurred while visitors were at the Georgia amusement park on Monday afternoon.

During the fall, the man struck a roller coaster car three different times, according to a witness. His plunge was also captured in a souvenir picture belonging to another person at the park.

“He was in our pictures,” the witness said. “He fell and hit the car three different times.”

The incident forced Goliath to stop while the roller coaster was on an incline, WSBTV reported. Riders remained in the cars until crews could begin moving them from the halted attraction.

The evacuation proceeded four riders at a time, according to WSBTV. The process continued as those aboard the roller coaster waited to be removed following the fatal fall.

The account from the scene described frightened visitors trapped on the ride until the evacuation was completed. The coaster had stopped on the incline after the man plunged from the attraction.

Goliath reaches a speed of 70 miles per hour, according to information posted on the Six Flags website. The roller coaster also stands 200 feet tall, making the fall and emergency response especially harrowing for those who witnessed the incident.
