Sen. Ted Cruz offered a blistering assessment of the Republican Party’s sweeping 2026 midterm losses, calling the result a “blue tsunami” after Democrats seized both chambers of Congress and swept every statewide race in Texas, as reported by Fox News.

The Texas Republican said the outcome represented more than an ordinary midterm setback. In a lengthy post on X, he warned that Republicans had lost touch with voters who were struggling with rising everyday expenses and growing frustration.

“2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an a-- kicking,” Cruz wrote. “It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation.”

The Democratic breakthrough reached traditionally Republican strongholds across the country, but Cruz focused heavily on the collapse in his home state. Democrats won every statewide race in Texas, ending decades of Republican dominance.

“Nowhere are the consequences of this election greater than Texas,” Cruz wrote. “In the Lone Star State, we lost every single statewide election.”

Cruz did not attempt to sugarcoat the new political reality facing Republicans. “Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter. But Texas, today at least, is blue,” he continued.

Talarico Twists Jesus Into a Campaign Prop and His Sermon Implodes

Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the race for the U.S. Senate, according to the Fox News Decision Desk. The result marked the first Democratic Senate victory in Texas in nearly four decades.

Democrats also captured the governor’s office as state Rep. Gina Hinojosa defeated longtime Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, according to the Fox News Decision Desk. Democratic candidates additionally prevailed in the state’s lieutenant governor and attorney general races.

Cruz argued that the Republican defeat was driven in part by the party’s failure to adequately address the cost of living. He listed several expenses that had become sources of frustration for voters.

“Food is too high, gas is too high, diesel is too high, insurance is too high, life is too high,” Cruz wrote. He added, “Understandably, people were pissed off, and elected Republicans didn't do enough to address their very real pain.”

The senator also criticized tariffs and the prolonged war with Iran, arguing that both contributed to voter frustration. He said Republicans had lost support among blue-collar workers, young voters, farmers, ranchers, and Hispanic voters.

Evangelical Christians, Cruz said, did not turn out with the same enthusiasm seen in previous elections. He concluded that Republicans had “alienated rural America,” another damaging verdict for a party that had relied on those voters.

After the election, Cruz called Talarico to congratulate the Democrat on his victory. “Last night, I called James Talarico. I congratulated him on his very impressive victory,” Cruz wrote, adding that they had a “pleasant conversation.”

Cruz said he was willing to work with Talarico on issues that would benefit Texas. During the campaign, Talarico had presented himself as a moderate committed to representing Texans rather than Democratic interests in Washington.

Paxton, President Donald Trump and other national Republicans had labeled Talarico a “communist” and a vegan in barbecue-loving Texas. They pointed to his support for the transgender community in the Texas Legislature and a floor speech in which he called God “nonbinary.”

Cruz rejected the notion that the election had transformed the basic identity of Texas voters. “We have not suddenly become a bunch of tofu-eating, gun-banning, tutu-wearing pinko commie liberals,” Cruz wrote.

“That ain’t us. Texas is still Texas.”

Despite the scale of the Republican losses, Cruz predicted that the party could rebuild and recover. “We will rebuild as a true blue-collar party, not by embracing socialism, but by being real free-market conservatives,” he continued.

“But hear me now: we will bring Texas back,” Cruz wrote.

“Texas will be red again.”

Cruz closed his assessment with another promise of a Republican comeback, even after Democrats captured Congress and delivered historic victories in Texas. “It is dark right now, but it is always darkest before the dawn, and morning is coming,” he said.
