WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Obama revived his Cheesecake Factory joke while campaigning Wednesday for Jon Ossoff and Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and President Trump both responded to Obama’s attack on the White House upgrades.
- Obama accused the administration of prioritizing its response to his joke over inflation, affordability, and interest rates.
- The critique portrays Obama’s restaurant joke and economic lecture as elitist, stale, and politically diminished.
Former President Barack Obama once stood as a global symbol of “hope and change,” a politician whose supporters treated him as a figure of historic importance. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, served eight years as the nation’s first black president, and promised a post-racial world.
Even critics who opposed Obama’s policies could acknowledge that he carried an air of presidential authority. He wore the office well, inspired millions, and enjoyed a level of media adoration that transformed him into something larger than an ordinary political figure.
Those days now appear long gone. The former president has increasingly looked like a diminished political celebrity struggling to recapture the attention and influence that once came effortlessly.
Michelle Obama, meanwhile, has generated attention with her own complaints and public commentary. Her frequent grievances often produce more headlines than anything her husband says or does.

Obama demonstrated his reduced stature with a crack about President Donald Trump and the White House. “He [Trump] has got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
The line attacked both Trump’s taste and a successful American restaurant chain beloved by plenty of diners. It also raised the obvious question of what, exactly, the Cheesecake Factory did to deserve becoming collateral damage in Obama’s latest political routine.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded by pointing toward Obama’s own presidential project. “This is the man who built the museum and it looks like Darth Vader’s tomb.”
Trump then fired back over the condition of the White House before the upgrades. “He doesn’t notice dirt and filth that hadn’t been cleaned, where the walls hadn’t been cleaned for years.”
Rather than leave the exchange behind, Obama returned to the subject Wednesday night at a rally supporting Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff’s reelection bid in Georgia. The event also supported gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms and her effort to become governor of the Peach State.
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins highlighted Obama’s attempt to keep the controversy alive. Obama complained that the administration had devoted substantial energy to responding to his Cheesecake Factory joke instead of focusing on economic concerns.
“They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke.” Obama presented the pushback as an example of misplaced priorities by the White House.
He continued, “The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy.” Obama argued that Bessent should instead be focused on affordability, inflation, and interest rates.
Obama also said officials wanted Bessent to hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory. Yet the outrage rang hollow after Obama himself chose to drag the restaurant chain into a juvenile political attack.
Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

The economic lecture was especially rich given that inflation climbed to 9.1% under former President Joe Biden. Trump has since brought it down to more reasonable levels, while Democrats continue pushing the taxes and regulations that defined their governing approach.
The criticism of the White House upgrades was similarly strained. Presidents have updated the building since it was constructed, and improving an antiquated White House hardly qualifies as a scandal.
Obama appeared to recognize that his original comment carried the same kind of elitist stink that damaged Hillary Clinton when she spoke about “deplorable people.” At the Wednesday rally, he tried to soften the image and present himself as anything but a Martha’s Vineyard snob.
His noticeably different accent was part of that performance. The man once sold by the media as one of the great statesmen of his era was reduced to recycling a mean joke about an American business while campaigning for liberal candidates.
Obama also asked listeners to believe that his routine for roughly a decade involved spending time at Chuck E. Cheese with ordinary Americans. That attempt at regular guy authenticity was about as convincing as the manufactured outrage over the White House response.
Obama is already trying to walk back his "Cheesecake Factory" comment: "Let me get this on the record. I am the father of two daughters. I lived at Chuck E. Cheese and the Cheesecake Factory! That was my jam for about a decade." https://t.co/uHmu1pZ3HR

The mighty have not merely fallen. Obama is showing that beneath the old media mythology and soaring rhetoric was a partisan politician whose current material consists of restaurant jokes, economic finger-wagging, and complaints when his targets hit back.
The 2026 midterms will determine the future of Trump’s America First agenda, with Republicans needing to retain control of both chambers of Congress. Obama’s appearance in Georgia showed the role he is now playing as Democrats fight for relevance and power.
