Hollywood stars are pulling back the curtain on the romantic scenes that delighted audiences but sometimes left the performers themselves less than impressed.
Rob Lowe, Sharon Stone, Sylvester Stallone, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Sally Field have all revealed memorable details about their best or worst on-screen kisses, as reported by Fox News.
Lowe named Nastassja Kinski as the best on-screen kiss of his career during a recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live.” The two actors worked together on “The Hotel New Hampshire.”
While playing “Plead the Fifth” with host Andy Cohen, Lowe offered a straightforward explanation for his choice. “Have a look at her,” he said.
“At that moment in time, she was probably the most beautiful woman I’d certainly ever seen,” Lowe continued. Despite that admiration, the “The Outsiders” star said he felt “very, very scared” to kiss Kinski.
Sharon Stone also had an immediate answer when discussing her favorite screen partner. During an April interview on SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy,” she called Robert De Niro “the best kisser in the business.”
Stone said their kiss while filming the 1995 movie “Chicago” “really just knocked me out.” She described a scene in which her character persuades De Niro’s character to give her money before leaning over to kiss him.
The moment apparently worked for both performers. Stone told Cohen that when director Martin Scorsese asked whether they wanted another take, “We both looked at him and went, 'Yeah, I think maybe we need one more.'”
Sylvester Stallone’s recollection of kissing Talia Shire in “Rocky” was considerably less enthusiastic. In an interview with Page Six Hollywood, Stallone described their famous romantic moment as “the kiss from hell,” although he did not blame Shire.
“Then I go in to kiss her — pull the hat off, the glasses — and… her nose is running. Badly,” Stallone recalled. He said he had to continue moving forward with the scene and believed immediately that he would soon have the flu.
Stallone said he ended up in bed with a runny nose shortly after the scene was filmed. The movie kiss may have become a favorite among fans, but his memory of making it was dominated by the uncomfortable circumstances.
Nicole Kidman pointed to bad breath as the problem behind her worst on-screen kiss. During a March appearance on the “Las Culturistas” podcast, the “Practical Magic” star said she “cannot stand bad breath” and called it a “dealbreaker.”
Kidman singled out her “Big Little Lies” co-star Alexander Skarsgard for eating falafel before a romantic scene. “You want me to lean in? Smell good,” she said while explaining her position.
“I'm like, 'No, no, no, Alex. I'm meant to be kissing you and into you. Put away the falafel now. Because the bad breath does not turn me on,'” Kidman recalled. She also said there should be no falafel before kissing or making love.
Kate Hudson has been equally candid about several former screen partners. During Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test with her “The Glass Onion” co-star Janelle Monáe, Hudson compared kisses with Billy Crudup and Matthew McConaughey.
“I think Billy is a gentler kisser,” Hudson said, stopping short of declaring him better. She described Crudup’s approach as more sophisticated and compared the two kissing styles to theater, Stanislavski and Longhorns.
When asked about Dane Cook, her co-star in 2008’s “My Best Friend’s Girl,” Hudson quickly answered, “No. Canceled.” She previously told Gwyneth Paltrow that kissing McConaughey in “Fool’s Gold” ranked among her worst experiences.
“The thing is, every time I kiss McConaughey, it's like there's just something happening, and there's like snot or wind,” Hudson said. She recalled that during their final ocean kiss in “Fool’s Gold,” McConaughey had snot across his face.
Hudson’s favorite, however, was Liv Tyler. When Monáe asked her to identify her best on-screen kiss, Hudson answered, “She has the softest lips of them all.”
Sally Field also named an unexpected worst kiss despite having dated the actor involved. During a December 2022 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” she selected Burt Reynolds and their kiss in “Smokey and the Bandit.”
“It was just not something he did very well,” Field said. When Cohen asked whether the problem was “The tongue?” she replied, “No, we’re not totally involved [with the kiss], it was just a lot of drooling.”
