The U.S. Army has released the first version of a modernized system intended to become the service’s official source for upgraded munitions requirements and expenditure reporting. The rollout marks a major change in how the Army handles ammunition information across the force.
The Total Army Combat and Training Munitions Information System, known as TACTMIS, is set to replace the Total Ammunition Management Information System, or TAMIS. The older system is scheduled to retire on Oct. 30.
TACTMIS is intended to modernize how the Army plans, manages and reports munitions used for training, testing, operational and combat activities. Its reach covers requirements and reporting functions central to keeping Army units armed and prepared.
“TACTMIS is a foundational step in modernizing how the Army manages the munitions that enable readiness and warfighting,” Army Chief of Munitions and G-3/5/7 Deputy Chief of Staff John C. Hinnant said in the release.
“It gives the Total Army a more authoritative, integrated and accountable way to generate requirements, manage authorizations and maintain trusted visibility of munitions data across the force.”
The Army developed TACTMIS under the Software Acquisition Pathway and built it using the Appian Platform. The system was designed as a cloud enabled, low code Software as a Service capability.

Its functions support requirements calculations, authorization management, request processing and enterprise reporting. That combination is intended to bring several critical munitions management tasks into a modern digital system.
TACTMIS uses a common organizational framework designed to reduce manual workload and improve data integrity. The Army also expects it to increase visibility into munitions demand and fulfillment across the service and among joint partners.
The system can coordinate workflows across enterprise systems while preserving the commanding role of the Army systems and data sources with which it interacts. According to the announcement, that structure supports readiness planning and provides timely information for senior leaders and defense industrial base requests.

“TACTMIS moves the Army from fragmented and manual munitions-management processes toward a modern digital capability built for the scale and speed of today’s force,” CW3 Deidre Burgos, TACTMIS program manager, said in the release.

“Our focus is ensuring commanders and staffs have reliable tools to manage munitions requirements, authorizations, forecasts and expenditures with greater accuracy, transparency and confidence.”
The new system also supports the Army’s wider modernization work, including Ammo360. That software initiative is intended to strengthen ammunition accountability and unify the operating picture within the Army’s network.
TACTMIS is designed to serve more than 10,000 users around the world. It is also expected to operate without dedicated administrators at the unit level, reducing the need for individual organizations to maintain specialized local support.

The platform allows the Army to update TACTMIS incrementally as requirements, policies and mission needs change. That approach is intended to make future enhancements possible without requiring a complete redesign of the system.
Planned improvements include a classified capability for real time reporting on combat munition requirements and expenditures. According to the announcement, that capability is intended to support readiness and logistics operations.
“Delivering this initial release is an important milestone, but it is also the beginning of an enduring modernization effort,” Burgos said. “TACTMIS provides the digital foundation the Army needs to evolve alongside future operational requirements while maintaining uninterrupted support to the force’s ability to arm, train, and sustain.”
The initial release begins the Army’s transition away from TAMIS before its scheduled Oct. 30 retirement. TACTMIS now provides the foundation for expanded reporting, greater visibility and future modernization of munitions management across the force.
