WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Scott Jennings linked the French riots to Europe’s migrant crisis and an attack on Western civilization.
- Leigh McGowan blamed frustrated French students, economic inequality, inadequate education, low pay, and dissatisfaction with the government.
- The commentary highlighted Palestinian flags and reports that Jewish owned businesses in Marseille were targeted while Muslim owned businesses were untouched.
- McGowan acknowledged that the unrest had gotten out of hand and that terrible events were occurring.
Scott Jennings once again turned a CNN panel into a fireworks show, clashing with liberal commentator Leigh McGowan over the unrest in France. McGowan did not take kindly to Jennings’ blunt assessment that the riots were a product of Europe’s migrant crisis, as reported by Townhall.
The dispute centered on what was driving rioters who were burning property, looting stores, and damaging historical landmarks. Jennings connected the destruction to migration and to a broader attack on Western civilization wherever weakness could be found.

The source commentary sided squarely with Jennings. It pointed to Palestinian flags among the unrest and argued that such symbols made McGowan’s effort to explain the riots as a student-driven economic protest especially unconvincing.
Communist and Palestinian flags were visible in the mix, according to the commentary. It acknowledged that white leftist agitators were also involved, but highlighted reports that Jewish-owned businesses in Marseille were targeted while Muslim-owned businesses were left untouched.
The rioters had addresses, the commentary stated, sharpening its argument that the destruction was not simply random anger over education, wages, or inequality. That detail also cut against McGowan’s attempt to connect the unrest to the yellow vest movement.
Jennings laid out his case directly: “France is suffering, and all of Europe is suffering from a migrant crisis, and there are people running wild in France, burning things down, destroying historical landmarks, looting stores, and they’re flying the colors of the Palestinians while they do it.”
“It has nothing to do with anything other than this attempt to tear down Western civilization wherever they perceive weakness, and right now there is weakness in Europe. They have allowed this migration crisis.”
That was the heart of Jennings’ argument. Europe had allowed a migration crisis to develop, and the resulting unrest was now being expressed through destruction, looting, and the display of Palestinian colors.
McGowan immediately rejected his description of events. “Absolutely false.”
She then offered a dramatically different explanation: “These things that happen in France are because a bunch of students started it because they didn’t like the way that the country was being run. They weren’t getting enough.”
“It’s the same problem that we have all over the world right now. There is not enough for the people that aren’t at the top.”
McGowan continued by focusing on material concerns. “There is not enough education. There is not enough money.”
“We are not being paid enough for our jobs. They were French students that started this protest.”
McGowan did concede that the situation had spiraled beyond an ordinary protest and that terrible events were occurring. “Has it gotten out of hand? Absolutely. Are terrible things happening there? Absolutely…”
CNN NewsNight goes OFF THE RAILS when @scottjenningsky and Leigh McGowan debate the violence in France.
Like clockwork, McGowan wants to ignore the migrant crisis. Jennings: “France is suffering, and all of Europe is suffering from a migrant crisis, and there are people running wild in France, burning things down, destroying historical landmarks, looting stores, and they’re flying the colors of the Palestinians while they do it. It has nothing to do with anything other than this attempt to tear down Western civilization wherever they perceive weakness, and right now there is weakness in Europe. It’s the same problem that we have all over the world right now. There is not enough for the people that aren’t at the top. There is not enough education. There is not enough money. Her concessions did not settle the central dispute. Jennings was focused on migrant unrest, Palestinian symbols, and an assault on Western civilization, while McGowan presented the turmoil as an uprising rooted in frustration over money, education, jobs, and political leadership.
The source commentary dismissed McGowan’s explanation and treated the presence of Palestinian flags as the glaring fact she could not explain away. Its conclusion was simple: when Palestinian colors are everywhere during the chaos, blaming the entire spectacle on frustrated French students does not pass the smell test.
The targeting described in Marseille added another difficult element for McGowan’s version. Jewish-owned businesses were attacked, Muslim-owned businesses were spared, and the rioters reportedly possessed addresses, according to the source commentary.
For Jennings, the disorder reflected European weakness after leaders allowed the migration crisis. For McGowan, it reflected people outside the economic elite demanding more education, money, and compensation for their work.
That sharp divide produced the latest CNN eruption involving Jennings. One side saw organized destruction tied to migration and hostility toward the West, while the other tried to package the chaos as a familiar protest over economic unfairness.
The commentary was having none of that liberal spin. It judged Jennings’ explanation as correct, rejected the yellow vest comparison, and pointed back to the Palestinian flags and targeted Jewish businesses as the details that gave the game away.
She was a leftist for 30 years. She said she always believed in open borders and letting refugees in. But after seeing what’s happening in Milan and France, she now realizes the saying “import the Third World, become the Third World” is actually true.
She admitted she’d been completely brainwashed and is encouraging others to understand that it’s okay to change your mind, saying the left preys on empathy. LOVE TO SEE THIS. Hopefully, more people wake up. — Gina Milan (@ginamilan_) October 20, 2026
