Selena Gomez is speaking candidly about a vocal change she attributes to years of nicotine vaping. In an Instagram Stories video posted Sunday, the singer said the habit changed the sound of her voice and acknowledged how difficult nicotine can be to quit, as reported by Page Six.

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” she said in the video. “I vaped nicotine a lot, and nicotine is so hard to quit.”

Gomez also issued a direct warning to anyone considering taking up vaping. She said that if people are thinking of starting the habit, “it’s just not worth it.”

The singer was blunt about her regret, saying, “It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice.” She then laughed as she said listeners who do not like hearing her voice can simply choose not to listen.

Gomez also shared her excitement about having stopped vaping, although she made clear that leaving the habit behind remains challenging. Her message combined a personal update about quitting with encouragement for others facing their own struggles.

“But I am really excited because I stopped [vaping] and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she said.

This was not the first time Gomez, 34, had addressed the dramatic change in her voice. Last December, the pop star attributed the vocal difference to swelling in her throat.

“I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes,” she said during an Instagram Live at the time. Gomez also sought to ease concern by adding, “That’s all. That’s good.”

Her comments about vaping arrived amid a series of candid disclosures about her health. Gomez has spoken specifically about her battle with lupus and the effects the condition and its treatment have had on her body.

According to the Mayo Clinic, lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation. That inflammation may affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.

Gomez has said that her experience with lupus has included weight fluctuations triggered by treatment. She discussed those changes during an episode of the 2023 Apple TV+ series “Dear…”

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications,” the actress shared. She also described the public reaction to those physical changes and the criticism she faced.

“And obviously, people just ran with it … It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

The former Disney Channel star has also spoken openly about her bipolar disorder. She has discussed how she navigates the condition within her marriage to Benny Blanco and the value she finds in having an understanding partner.

“It is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand what’s happening,” she gushed during a March episode of her husband’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast.

Across those disclosures, Gomez has connected changes in her voice to vaping and throat swelling, while linking her weight fluctuations to medications used during her lupus battle. She has also described the role understanding plays as she navigates bipolar disorder in her marriage.

Her latest message remained focused on her decision to stop vaping and her hope that she can continue without it. While acknowledging that quitting nicotine is hard, Gomez urged others not to begin and offered encouragement to people dealing with difficult experiences of their own.
