WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- JD Vance addressed questions about former U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle during a CBS town hall in Michigan.
- Vance condemned selling White House access but refused to make judgments based only on a media report.
- He told Tony Dokoupil that the administration would follow the law and cooperate with congressional subpoenas.
- CBS is ignoring Democratic promises to investigate Trump and Republicans if Democrats regain congressional control.
Vice President JD Vance has been hitting the campaign trail to help Republicans while making the case that the GOP offers American voters a better choice than the Democrats. His latest appearance brought that message to a CBS town hall in Michigan on Saturday night.
The event covered questions across a variety of issues, but CBS News appeared particularly interested in pressing Vance about controversy involving former U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle. What was apparently intended as a difficult question quickly fizzled once Vance answered directly.
Vance did not accept the media framing or attempt to dodge the issue. Instead, he clearly condemned the alleged conduct while also refusing to treat a news report as established fact.
“First of all, if somebody's selling access to the White House, that's disgusting and despicable, and they should suffer consequences,” Vance responded.

That answer left little room for confusion about his position. If someone is selling White House access, Vance said the conduct is unacceptable and should bring consequences.
But he was equally clear that judgments should rest on evidence, not simply on whatever happens to appear in a media report. That distinction turned the attempted trap back on the network.
“I want to make those judgments based on the facts and not based on a random news media report that I read,” Vance said.
The response was effective because Vance did not try to minimize the underlying allegation or dance around the question. He condemned the alleged behavior, then reminded CBS that a media report is not automatically a proven set of facts.
That final point also delivered a pointed rebuke to the press without requiring a long lecture about media credibility. Vance simply declined to base his conclusions on reporting that had not been established as fact, leaving CBS host Tony Dokoupil to acknowledge it was a “fair point.”
Dokoupil then shifted to what Democrats might do if they gained control of the House or Senate. He said congressional Democrats had vowed to investigate and asked whether Vance and the administration would cooperate if Democrats issued subpoenas.
Vance again answered without hesitation or evasion. “Of course I will. Look, I mean, we follow the law.”

The exchange undercut any suggestion that Vance or the administration would automatically resist lawful congressional demands. They have nothing to fear from such scrutiny and therefore no reason to object to following the law.

Yet Dokoupil’s question left a much larger issue untouched. He did not press the matter of Democrats openly promising investigations of the Trump administration and Republicans if they return to power.
Democrats have issued numerous threats about what they would do with renewed congressional authority. Their approach points toward constant investigations targeting Trump rather than a compelling policy agenda for voters.
That omission matters because the prospect of Democrats using government power against political opponents should draw serious media scrutiny. Instead, CBS focused on whether Vance would cooperate with subpoenas tied to an investigation Democrats have already promised.
Democrats lack good policies to campaign on and have instead centered their pitch on hostility toward Trump. If they regain control, the likely result would be round-the-clock investigations rather than meaningful governing priorities.
CBS had an opportunity to question that posture but chose another path. The network tried to put Vance on the defensive over Guilfoyle, only to receive a straightforward answer condemning wrongdoing, demanding facts, and promising compliance with the law.
Vance’s handling of the exchange showed why media traps can collapse when the target refuses to play along. He answered the substance, rejected assumptions based solely on reporting, and calmly committed to following the law.
For Republican voters, the broader political message is just as direct. The possibility of Democrats reclaiming congressional power and launching nonstop investigations gives conservatives another reason to turn out, flood the polls, and vote red.
