Abdul El-Sayed is struggling to connect with black voters, and his latest campaign effort is not exactly helping. A late-night gas station snack run has instead become another painfully awkward moment for a candidate already facing doubts about his agenda.
Townhall recently reported that black voters and other Democrats do not feel comfortable with El-Sayed’s radical and shifting political positions. The criticism centered on an agenda portrayed as extreme and marked by flip-flopping.
That discomfort forms the backdrop for El-Sayed’s latest attempt at voter outreach. The episode featured spicy snacks, a gas station and a conveniently present TMZ camera ready to capture the whole encounter.

The source previously accused El-Sayed of pandering to Michigan’s Jewish community by pretending to care about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This time, the writer argued, El-Sayed was trying to perform the same routine for the black community.

Instead of offering a serious response to the concerns raised about his politics, El-Sayed made a late-night stop for spicy snacks. The supposedly relatable campaign moment quickly produced more secondhand embarrassment than authentic connection.
TMZ also happened to be at the random gas station and spoke with El-Sayed during the snack run. The source greeted that coincidence with heavy sarcasm, suggesting the appearance looked coordinated or staged rather than spontaneous.
The resulting footage did little to quiet that suspicion. El-Sayed examined the snack and began discussing why it contained gluten, turning what was apparently meant to be a casual moment into an oddly forced exchange.
“There's really no reason there should be gluten in this,” El-Sayed said. “It's popcorn.”
He then ate a couple of kernels and coughed. “It's not actually hot, bro,” he added.
El-Sayed also offered some Gatorade and said, “Tell me how good that is.” He did not put his mouth on the bottle during the exchange.
The snack itself was supposed to be spicy, but El-Sayed insisted it was not actually hot after coughing. That contradiction only added to the clumsy atmosphere surrounding the gas station appearance.
Townhall’s writer said the desperation was strong enough to smell from across Lake Michigan. The assessment was blunt, but the video’s conspicuous setup and strained effort at relatability invited precisely that kind of mockery.

The entire episode was described as a little too obvious, even by the standards of political pandering.

What may have been intended as a breezy encounter instead became another example of campaign theater that landed with a thud.
The source went even further, calling the moment more cringeworthy than Clinton’s handbag hotsauce.
Remember when Hillary was putting hot sauce in her purse? Yeah.

That is not an especially flattering comparison for any politician attempting to convince voters that a supposedly casual food moment happened naturally.
For El-Sayed, the ridicule comes as the source says black voters and other Democrats remain uneasy about his agenda. A spicy snack appearance does not address the radicalism or flip-flopping cited in that criticism.
Instead, the gas station visit placed those political problems beside a visibly awkward attempt to appear relatable. The campaign move may have produced attention, but the attention described by Townhall was almost entirely derisive.
The article concluded with an editor’s note focused on the 2026 Midterms and President Trump’s America First agenda. The note said Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
