French student protests spilled into neighboring Belgium on Friday, where extremist left wing elements allegedly helped transform demonstrations into a violent riot. Brussels endured smashed property, burning vehicles and running clashes between police and mobile groups of rioters.
Authorities arrested 110 people after a day of chaos across the Belgian capital. Public transportation and flights were disrupted, buildings were damaged, and several vehicles were burned as police struggled to disperse those responsible for the violence.
The disorder unfolded as local student demonstrations coincided with strikes and protests called by trade unions. The two groups met around Brussels Central station while protesting the government of centre-right Prime Minister Bart de Wever.
They were then joined by “hooded thugs,” including black block antifa activists and others intent on violence. The competing demonstrations quickly descended into a riot directed against the De Wever government.

Violent groups battled police near Brussels Central station, vandalized vehicles and started fires. Several buses were burned, while rioters constructed bonfires from towers of bicycles belonging to the city’s short-term rental program.
The bicycle fires burned fiercely because of their lithium batteries. Reports stated that the rental company lost as many bicycles during Friday’s destruction as it would normally lose over an entire year.
WATCH:
Just like in France, protests in Belgium have been parlayed into riots after organic protests were infiltrated by the hard left to serve their agenda of pushing European countries into a weakened, pre-revolutionary state. On Friday Brussels police said the rioting was not the work of the legitimate student protest groups but of external actors, and on Wednesday government minister Bernard Quintin told the Belgian parliament “the security services have informed me that the Antifa are infiltrating the student movement and inciting them to violence”, identifying “adults who take it upon themselves to manipulate children to convey political messages in a violent way… [in an] Antifa-like movement”. This can and will spread, and the riots of recent weeks in France are just a warm-up act for what the left intends to unleash should the people have the temerity to elect a right-wing-sovereigntist President in the form of Marine Le Pen. Coming to a city near you, soon.

The unrest came amid continuing protests over the De Wever government’s effort to reduce Belgium’s budget deficit. The country’s government debt stands at roughly 110% of gross domestic product.
Opposition to De Wever’s government has continued since he took control of Belgium’s notoriously dysfunctional government last year. Even some of the infrastructure destroyed Friday had only recently been replaced following an earlier round of anti-government riots.
Bus stops at Brussels Central station were smashed despite being only days old. They had just been reinstated after rioters destroyed them during the previous outbreak of unrest.
After clearing rioters from the railway station area, Belgian riot police spent the rest of the afternoon pursuing highly mobile groups across different neighborhoods. The struggle was described as a giant “game” of cat and mouse around the city.
Police maintained that the violence was separate from the student protests themselves and that outside elements had hijacked the day. Government minister Bernard Quintin told the Belgian parliament that security officials had warned him about antifa involvement.
Quintin said, “The security services have informed me that the Antifa are infiltrating the student movement and inciting them to violence”. He also identified “adults who take it upon themselves to manipulate children to convey political messages in a violent way… [in an] Antifa-like movement”.

The unrest echoed events in France, where the hard left seized upon student protests as a vehicle for revolutionary ambitions and folded ethnic grievances into the demonstrations. Many of those protests developed a distinct character of diverse urban unrest.
President Donald Trump described the French turmoil as a manifestation of “out of control mass migration” and aggressive Islamism. Numerous foreign flags were also visible during the Brussels disorder, including Palestinian and Congo banners.
Brussels was not the only Belgian city hit by violence in recent days. Far-left antifa groups had been active in Liège for two weeks and were again accused of infiltrating student protests.
The government claimed violence in Liège was being fueled by outsiders who were not students and traveled to the city to cause trouble. Police arrested 50 people there on Wednesday after officers were pelted with cobblestones and fires were set.
In Antwerp on Friday, veteran right-wing nationalist lawmaker Filip Dewinter reported being assaulted by a group of Moroccans after he was recognized while walking to the town hall. Dewinter said he reported the incident to police.
Dewinter said, “The Moroccan community feels all-powerful and has turned Antwerp into an occupied and Islamized city… Aggression and violence are part of the intimidation toward everyone who disagrees with that.” His account added another troubling episode to several days of unrest and violence across Belgium.
