The NYPD said Caraballo and Mejia will be returned to New York City to face attempted murder charges. Police did not provide further details about the expected timing of their return.
United States Marshal Ricky J. Patel said the task force “worked around the clock” to track the suspects.
“When individuals commit violent, unprovoked acts against members of law enforcement, there is nowhere they can hide,” Patel said.
“We will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our police officers to hold violent offenders fully accountable.”

Authorities said the two men pulled up beside Detective Jose Mercedes on an electric bike in broad daylight. They allegedly attempted to take the detective’s gold chain during the Friday afternoon encounter in the Bronx.
Mercedes fought back during the attempted robbery, according to police. The attackers then stabbed him seven times with a knife before fleeing and leaving the wounded detective bleeding on the sidewalk.

The violent encounter unfolded while Mercedes was off duty. Police said the suspects sped away from the scene after the attack, setting off a search that ultimately stretched from New York City into New England.
Sources said Mercedes survived because the blade missed his vital organs. Despite being stabbed seven times, the detective was able to receive treatment and later leave the hospital.
Mercedes is assigned to the Bronx’s 44th precinct. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center after the stabbing and remained there until he was released Monday.
Authorities publicly identified the suspected attackers Tuesday while a massive manhunt was underway.

By Wednesday, police announced that both men had been found hiding in the basement in Lynn and taken into custody overnight.
Surveillance video captured the suspects near the crime scene, according to authorities. Mejia, identified as the driver, was seen speeding down the sidewalk while the suspected stabber sat shirtless behind him on the electric bike.
Both men entered the United States illegally during the Biden administration, according to the report. They also had histories of arrests in New York City but had been released under the city’s sanctuary rules and laws described as soft on crime.

Those sanctuary rules prevent local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE, according to the report. The earlier releases placed both men back on the streets despite their previous arrests in Gotham.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin blamed the Biden administration and sanctuary politicians for the chain of releases.
“Both of these suspects were released into the country by the Biden administration, and despite multiple prior arrests in New York, sanctuary politicians refused to cooperate with ICE and released them."
The basement arrests brought the manhunt to an end, but the criminal proceedings remain ahead. Caraballo and Mejia now face their expected return to New York City, where the NYPD said they will answer to attempted murder charges over the attack on Mercedes.
