Nearly 30 years after Princess Diana’s death, her younger brother, Charles Spencer, is looking back with one painful question still on his mind.

The 9th Earl Spencer has revealed that he wonders whether he could have offered Diana more support as she navigated her public life.

Spencer, 62, spoke about that regret during an interview with People Magazine while promoting his new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. The book hit stores earlier this week and explores his memories of his late sister.

“Could I have done more to help her with her public life ? I probably could,” Spencer told the magazine.

His answer reflects a concern that has remained with him through the decades.

Spencer said he still considers whether there were other ways he might have helped Diana when she most needed support.

He also made clear that he did assist his sister during the final period of her life.

“Towards the end of her life, I did help her a bit,” he recalled.

“I had had some run-ins with the media . I helped her win a big libel case against a British newspaper, I would fight some battles for her quietly.”

Spencer also used the interview to challenge a longstanding criticism concerning his relationship with Diana.

He pushed back on claims that he refused to provide her with a home at Althorp following her 1996 divorce from then Prince Charles, who is now the King of England.

“One of the things people are throwing at me totally wrongly is that I wouldn’t give her a home,” Spencer said.

“When she was divorced, she did ask me for the Garden House at the back of the park. Diana had loved it because our sister, Jane [Fellowes], lived there with her children, and that was perfect for them.”

According to Spencer, the Garden House was not rejected because he was unwilling to help Diana. Instead, he said the proposed home raised security concerns involving her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Spencer recalled visiting the property with local police, who assessed whether the location could be protected. Their judgment, he said, was that it was not a safe option for Diana and her children.

“The local police went around there with me and they said, they just couldn’t protect William and Harry,” Spencer recounted.

“She could not have lived at the Garden House. It was not a viable option.”

Following her divorce, Diana continued living at Kensington Palace. She died the next year in a car crash in Paris, France, on August 31, 1997, while being chased by paparazzi.

Diana was 36 years old when she died. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including the paparazzi pursuit, remain controversial nearly three decades later.

Spencer said his connection with his sister has endured long after her death.

Asked whether he still feels Diana’s presence, he described turning to her memory when facing difficult or important moments.

“I do feel Diana on my side in tricky moments,” Spencer replied.

He also keeps a personal reminder of Diana close during significant meetings. Spencer said he wears cuff links that she gave him in the late 1980s whenever he has to confront something especially important.

“If I have to really go into something, a meeting where something really important is being sorted out or whatever, I always wear cuff links she gave me in the late ‘80s as a sort of memorial,”he added.

“I had a cousin who died tragically by their own hand last year and I told the parents that I was wearing Diana’s cuff links. Diana’s memory gives comfort to people even now.”

Those cuff links have become more than a private memorial for Spencer.

His comments suggest that Diana’s memory also offered comfort when his family experienced another tragic death last year.

As Spencer promotes Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, he is sharing his account of Diana’s life, their relationship and the moments that continue to weigh on him.

His regret remains rooted in the possibility that, despite the quiet battles he fought for her, he might have done more.
