The Marine Corps is offering financial and leave incentives to personnel willing to extend their overseas tours by at least one year. The service announced the options in an administrative message published Monday.
Marines who volunteer for an extension and receive approval may choose between a monetary incentive and two separate leave arrangements. The message was issued to clarify instructions for the Overseas Tour Extension Incentive Program.
The financial option provides $2,000, according to the service. That money is paid through 12 monthly installments of $166.66.
Those monthly payments are taxable unless they qualify for an exemption. The source message did not describe additional financial choices beyond the $2,000 incentive.
The first leave option provides 30 days of nonchargeable special rest and recuperative leave, also identified as SR&R leave. Marines selecting that option would receive the full leave period without transportation included as a separate benefit.
The second option provides a nonchargeable SR&R leave period lasting no more than 15 days. It also includes government funded round trip transportation to a port of entry in the contiguous United States.

Marines who extend their overseas tours by 13 months or longer may select the second leave option and receive five additional days of SR&R leave. That makes the longer extension relevant for personnel weighing the transportation option.
The administrative message states that the leave must be taken during a “single and continuous” period. Marines therefore cannot divide the authorized leave into multiple separate periods.
Government funded transportation also must be used concurrently with the approved leave period. The transportation and leave provisions are tied together under that option.

The incentives are available only to the Marine who receives approval for the overseas tour extension. Dependents cannot use the benefits provided through the program.
Marines also must finish their initial overseas tour before using the incentives. That requirement includes the completion of any extensions that were approved previously.
The program is available to Marines from any military occupational specialty and paygrade, provided they are entitled to basic pay. They also must be assigned to a location eligible under the program.

Beginning Nov. 1, eligible locations will include all posts outside the contiguous United States except Hawaii and countries within the Marine Corps Forces Europe area of responsibility. The message did not list additional geographic exceptions.
The process for seeking an extension differs between enlisted personnel and officers. Enlisted Marines should submit requests through their career counselor, while officers are instructed to send written requests to their military occupational specialty monitor.
The Marine Corps and the other military services use various incentives and bonuses to support recruitment and retention. Those offerings are regularly adjusted in response to manpower projections, budgetary outlooks and national economic conditions.
Earlier this month, the Marine Corps became the first military service to increase hostile fire pay and imminent danger pay rates for the 2027 fiscal year. The overseas tour incentives represent another personnel offering available under specific eligibility and approval requirements.

In a recent message announcing FY2027 enlistment bonuses, the Corps said the goal of those offers “is to maximize the number of fully trained, qualified, experienced, and deployable” Marines “over time and within any given personnel budget.”
The same message stated: “It is critical to channel applicants into the right occupational fields to maximize our return on investment and increase Marines’ propensity to serve beyond their initial contract.” The newly clarified overseas extension incentives similarly present approved Marines with a choice between cash and designated leave benefits.
