WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Carl’s Jr. will give free Angus Maximus burgers to the first 100 qualifying customers who submit photos of themselves discarding Burger King crowns.
  • Customers may instead submit a competitor receipt dated between January 1, 2026, and September 7, 2026.
  • The promotion requires submissions by 11:59 on September 25, and winners may claim burgers through October 27.
  • Burger King committed $700 million through 2028 to restaurant upgrades and efforts placing the Whopper at center stage.

Carl’s Jr. is turning a fast food rivalry into a full-blown battle for the burger throne.

The chain is offering free food to customers willing to trash Burger King’s iconic crown, delivering a promotion centered on public disrespect for the Whopper slinger, as reported by The New York Post.

“Easiest free burger of your life,” Carl’s Jr. declared in a viral Instagram post. The company followed with another pointed line: “Because you deserve better, king.”

The campaign is called the “Stealing The Crown” promotion.

Under its terms, Carl’s Jr. will give a free Angus Maximus to the first 100 people who send an Instagram direct message containing photos of themselves throwing away Burger King’s headpiece.

Customers have another way to qualify if they do not have a crown ready for ceremonial disposal.

Participants can submit an “old receipt” from a competitor, provided the proof of purchase is dated between January 1, 2026, and September 7, 2026.

All submissions must arrive by 11:59 on September 25 for participants to have a chance at receiving the burger.

The limited window gives customers only so much time to pick a side in this Instagram-fueled feud.

The Angus Maximus features 1/3 pound of 100% Angus beef. It is topped with American cheese, onion, pickle, mayo, and Special Sauce, with the whole creation served between a brioche bun.

Winners in the symbolic fast food regicide can claim their complimentary Angus Maximus through October 27.

The deal is available only to customers who are at least 18 and enrolled as Carl’s Jr. My Rewards members.

The campaign also comes with rules governing what customers can send.

The promotion says participants must avoid “illegal, obscene, defamatory, or otherwise inappropriate” content while making their pitch for a free burger.

Instagram viewers appeared ready to embrace the assignment and take a shot at Burger King along the way. One commenter wrote, “On my way.”

Another viewer asked, “You guys beefing?” A different commenter offered a fresh slogan for the campaign: “down with the crown!”

The promotion delivers plenty of petty entertainment, but Burger King remains a formidable target for Carl’s Jr. According to the QSR 2026 annual report ranking fast food chains, Carl’s Jr. placed 37th among 50 chains based on sales, growth, and other metrics, The Takeout reported.

Burger King’s performance has often been credited to its “Reclaim the Flame” campaign. That effort involved a commitment of $700 million through 2028 to overhaul restaurant design and technology while placing the Whopper increasingly at center stage.

The chain also revamped its signature burger. Burger King strengthened the bun, changed the mayo recipe, and began serving the Whopper in a box instead of wrapping it in paper.

Burger King president Tom Curtis compared the packaging change to dressing the Whopper in a tuxedo rather than a leisure suit.

The company continued tweaking its approach after hearing from customers this past winter.

That response included the Whopper Guarantee, under which Burger King pledged to remake any Whopper that customers considered “sub-par.”

The promise put the company’s best-known burger and customer satisfaction directly into the spotlight.

Curtis has shown that Burger King is hardly above tossing a little shade of its own.

He was filmed happily eating a Whopper in what appeared to be a shot at McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski and his bungled Big Arch eating demonstration this past spring.

Carl’s Jr. is now trying to convert that competitive spirit into crown-tossing content and free Angus Maximus burgers.

Whether the stunt can dent Burger King’s reign is another question, but the invitation to commit symbolic burger monarchy mayhem is officially open.
