Republicans are gathering in Texas this week for an unprecedented midterm convention as the party attempts to rally its voters ahead of the November elections and defend its majorities in Congress, as reported by Fox News.

The Republican gathering, scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center, is the first national GOP convention specifically organized for a midterm election.

President Donald Trump announced the event earlier this year as an opportunity to highlight the administration's record and energize Republican voters.

Trump is scheduled to headline the convention, with Vice President JD Vance also delivering a major address.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to participate, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune is also expected to attend and help with fundraising efforts for Senate candidates.

Republican leaders are using the convention to draw a sharp distinction between their party and Democrats, particularly over economic policy and the direction of the Democratic Party.

“This is not a midterm like any other, because we actually have a competition against communism now, and that's a very serious thing. It's going to animate voters coast to coast,” Johnson said in an interview with Fox News Digital last month.

Johnson has also described the election as a contest between the policies Republicans say they have advanced and what they characterize as an increasingly left-wing Democratic agenda.

“What we're going to highlight at that convention is the fact that this is not your father's Democrat Party,” Johnson said.

“It's a contrast election, and people are making a contrast between common-sense solutions and candidates, and really crazy, which is represented by the other side.”

The GOP enters the midterm campaign with control of both chambers of Congress but faces several traditional disadvantages associated with the party holding the White House. Economic concerns are also expected to play a major role, particularly inflation and the cost of everyday necessities.

According to the Fox News national poll cited in the report, three out of four voters said inflation had caused them financial hardship, while 54% expected the economy to worsen.

Republicans are seeking to counter those concerns by emphasizing legislation signed by Trump that included tax reductions involving tips, overtime and Social Security.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters said the convention provides the party with an opportunity to explain its record directly to voters.

“This midterm convention gives us a chance, an opportunity to showcase all the great things this president has done, and this administration, to the American people in a direct way,” Gruters said.

Gruters also acknowledged the importance of turning out voters who may be less likely to participate when Trump himself is not on the ballot.

“We have a chance to defy history and win the midterms.”

He has separately described Trump as particularly effective at motivating those voters.

“We have a ton of money to spend,” Gruters told Fox Business.

“We have the cash, and we're going to deploy it in a way to make sure that we hold the majority.”

Democrats, meanwhile, are seeking to capitalize on Republican vulnerabilities. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin predicted that Democrats would regain power, while DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer criticized the Dallas gathering and tied Republicans closely to Trump.

“While everyday Americans struggle to pay their bills, fill up their tanks, or put food on the table, Republicans are hosting a multi-million dollar celebration to satisfy an aging and erratic Trump and tie vulnerable Republican candidates closer to his failed agenda,” Witmer said.

Witmer added that “Americans don’t want a ‘Trumpapalooza’ — they want lower costs and affordable healthcare.”

The convention is also designed to raise money for Republican campaigns. Organizers are seeking major contributions from donors, including an invitation offering a private roundtable and a photograph with Trump for more than $88,000.

Other scheduled or expected speakers include Attorney General Todd Blanche, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Donald Trump Jr.

The convention comes with Republicans facing a difficult political environment, but party officials say they intend to use the gathering to motivate their base, promote their legislative record and raise additional campaign money.

The 2026 midterms will determine control of Congress, making turnout among both parties a central focus as candidates move into the final stretch of the campaign.

The Dallas convention gives Republicans an opportunity to put their national leadership, campaign organization, and message on display just weeks before voters head to the polls.
